Mid-August signals the return of many American students to public school classes. Over the next few years, states will be implementing a new standard for public school education. The Common Core State Standards Initiative (CCSSI) was created in 2009 to identify and develop a common set of core knowledge and skills master in two topics, mathematics and English language arts, that every American high school graduate should master to succeed in college or a career. With teachers, parents and community leaders weighing in, the CCSSI is intended to develop academic standards that would be:
- Common: the standards would be the same across all states and in all grads
- Core: they would address mathematics and English language arts only
- State: the standards would be state developed and implemented
- Standards: the CCSSI would address standards only rather than a nationalized curricula or national test.
The CCSSI developed mathematics and English language arts standards for grades K-12 in a final draft published in June of 2010. The CCSSI indicated that the standards focus on core conceptual understandings and procedures starting in the early grades, which will enable teachers to take the time needed to teach core concepts and procedures well, thus giving students the opportunity to master them.
Forty-five states, D.C., four territories, and the Department of Defense Education Activity have adopted the Common Core State Standards. States such as California, Illinois, and New York had adopted the standards in 2010 with full implementation planned for this 2013-14 school year. Other states, such as Nevada, Ohio, Oregon, South Dakota, and Tennessee which also had adopted the standards in 2010 have planned for full implementation in the 2014-15 or 2015-16 school years.
