California Health and Safety Code Statutory History

Health and Safety Code: In 1939, the Legislature enacted an act to establish a Health and Safety Code, “consolidating and revising the law relating to the preservation of the public health and safety, including the health and safety of persons, the custody and disposition of dead bodies, and the safety and protection of property.” In 1995, after a year-long collaborative effort between health officials at various levels of the public and private sector, the 1939 Code was re-arranged into the following seven new sections: Administration of Public Health, Vital Records and Health Statistics, Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, Environmental Health, Communicable Disease Prevention and Control, Personal Health Care, and Statewide Health Planning and Development.
